Egyre gyakrabban látnak napvilágot olyan hírek, miszerint a General Motors a csődre készül, a legutóbb a New York Times értesült úgy, hogy a Pénzügyminisztérium június 1-ig adott határidőt az amerikai autógyártónak a folyamatok előkészítésére.

Az autószektor reorganizációját figyelő kormányzati szerv folyamatosan egyeztet a General Motors-zal és tanácsadóival, a cél ugyanis egy gyors csőd előkészítése. Az előkészületek arra szolgálnak, hogy könnyen csődvédelmet lehessen kérni, ha a társaság nem tud megegyezni hitelezőivel 28 milliárd dollárnyi kötvény részvényre váltásáról.

Az egyik terv szerint amit a társaság csődvédelmet kér, létrejönne egy cég, amely az autógyártó jó eszközeit vásárolja fel. A kevésbé népszerű márkák és gyárak pedig a régi vállalatnál maradnának, és évek folyamán számolnák fel őket.

A becslések szerint a "jó GM" 5 és 7 milliárd dollár közötti állami segítségre szorulna, míg a fennmaradó cégnek mintegy 70 milliárd dollárnyi állami pénzre lenne szüksége.
