91 éve, 1918. Júliusában mészárolták le a bolsevikok Jekatyerinburgban családjával együtt II. Miklóst az utolsó orosz cárt.

  A Romanov dinasztiába tartozó uralkodónak és családjának a kivégzése, egyszerű, alvilági módszerekkel történt. Olyan aljas módszerrel, amellyel a történelem későbbi szakaszaiban számtalanszor találkozhattunk. Igazi bolsevik „munka” volt. A jekatyerinburgi Ipatyev-ház alagsori szobájában érte utol végzete a cári családot: szabályosan lemészárolták őket. Az 1918. július 16-ról 17-re virradó éjjel felébresztették, a pincébe terelték őket, majd felolvasták halálos ítéletüket. Ezután őreik gépfegyvertüzet zúdítottak II. Miklós cárra, Alekszandra Fjodorovna cárnőre és gyerekeikre: Alekszej cárevicsre, Olgára, Tatjánára, Marijára, Anasztáziára, valamint a család orvosára, inasára, szakácsára és szobalányára. Aljas és megmagyarázhatatlan, mind a mai napig az a különös kegyetlenség, ahogy a bolsevik hordák bosszút álltak vélt vagy valós sérelmeikért. A mészárlás után a holttesteket elégették, a maradványokat mocsárba dobták, s azok csak az 1990-es évek elején kerültek elő. Hosszadalmas azonosítási eljárás indult, amely teljes bizonyossággal máig nem szolgált. 
  1998 nyarán, Szentpéterváron, a Péter-Pál erődben egyházi ceremónia mellett, végre ünnepélyesen örök nyugalomba helyezték az áldozatokat. 2000 augusztusában az orosz ortodox egyház vezetése szentté avatta II. Miklóst és családjának tagjait.
